Beans & Rice Burrito @ Cantina Loco in Buffalo NY. This large burrito is made up of pico de gallo, black beans, rice, lettuce and cilantro, to which I added sour cream, avocado, and pickled onions. It comes in a crisped flour tortilla and paper wrapper. As advertised, it’s pretty mediocre; the rice and beans lack seasoning, the pico is scant and lackluster. With my modifications, a squeeze of lime, and some rocket sauce, it’s a three star burrito. I wanted to like this more than I did, and as is I do not think its worth six bucks. I would like to see this reformulated, properly seasoned, and containing some of the aforementioned extras. Needs work.
Update:
I went back to Cantina in Summer 2012 for a sit-down dinner with friends. I opted for a vegetarian taco this time (sub beans for tofu), given my previously ‘meh’ experience with the above burrito. My taco was tasty and came on a crisped corn-tortilla (love), and the food ordered by the seven other people in my party was also well-received. I like Cantina I would consider upping my rating if subsequent visits improve, but as of now I still consider it lacking in some areas. In particular, during this visit I found their chips to be overpriced (and the salsa mediocre), and the margaritas were super disappointing. My margarita was watery with an off, almost pasteurized, taste to it that I can only assume was from using bottled (not fresh) lime juice. I hope to see this improve in my future visits.
